A Festival Guide To Skincare

Festival season is just around the corner and with that comes excitement, chaos, freedom and exhilaration. I find festivals to be very euphoric in that I feel like I am in a bubble of joyful people and smiles. It’s one of the only places where you tend not to let rain ruin your time, instead, you embrace it.

I’m not naive in thinking that skincare is at the forefront of many people’s minds when it comes to festivals. However, if you’re like me, and you want to attempt to keep up some consistency of a routine no matter what, then this one is for you.

We have to stay realistic with this. I’m not giving you a routine for if you’re ‘glamping’ and have access to a proper bathroom. I’m referring to those festivals where you camp in a field of tents and have to walk through sludgy mud to get to a toilet with a huge queue which is in fact, a hole in the ground.

First thing’s first, bring a portable mirror. You can use your phone camera, however, a mirror will allow you to see your skin a bit clearer. I’m not usually an advocate for the use of wipes but I can sympathise that in this instance they are often the easiest and most practical option, biodegradable of course. I would almost certainly use wipes to remove my makeup but then if I have the time I like to bring a small amount of a balm cleanser to follow with and with clean hands, massage this into my face. To remove this, I would use some reusable cotton pads or just normal ones. These are great as if you get them damp with a little water, it’s the closest thing to washing off your cleanser over the sink. I just find that using a balm cleanser as an extra step ensures that all my makeup is off and my face is properly clean. A micellar water would work here too and help to remove stubborn makeup after a long day.

When it comes to what products to bring, it’s important not to go too overboard and get carried away thinking you will have the time and patience to complete a 7 step routine. You most likely won't and it is highly possible that you may be drunk tipsy (oops), having stumbled back to your tent and the last thing you want to do is wash your face and apply 3 different serums. So, we’re keeping it quick, easy and simple. I would probably bring a hyaluronic acid serum (as I never go without), a moisturiser and an SPF.

Another good product to have is a hyaluronic acid spray. This way you don’t have to worry about your hands being particularly clean and can just spritz away whenever you feel like you’re lacking moisture.

For my moisturiser, I would pick a tube of something super hydrating and then whack a load of SPF on after that. But, if you’re taking me very literally when I say ‘simple’ then a moisturiser with SPF is probs the way you’ll go. Factor 50 that is!

Honestly, when it comes to festivals, just do your best. Any damage caused can be dealt with when you’re back. If you’ve been to a festival then you know that your first shower back is one of the best you’ve ever had and you’ve never felt more clean. So, save all the anti-ageing serums and the acids for when you’re home. Don’t worry about all of this too much (never thought I’d say that) and just HAVE FUN !!!!!!!!
